			INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR
16-BIT NDIS 2.01 DRIVER FOR MICROSOFT LAN MANAGER DOS WORKSTATIONS
WITH THE HP DESKDIRECT LAN ADAPTER (J2973A)

The Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) 2.01 is a 16-bit driver
used by Microsoft LAN Manager to gain access to the LAN.

The HP NDIS 2.01 driver is self-configuring, which means the driver will
automatically locate and read the HP DeskDirect LAN Adapter's configuration.
Only the DRIVERNAME parameter needs to be present under the [HPFEND]
 section in the PROTOCOL.INI file.

This directory tree contains drivers and related files needed to install
the HP DeskDirect LAN Adapter with Microsoft LAN Manager(tm) version 2.2,
or earlier, Basic or Enhanced Workstation in a DOS or Windows computer.

To install the HP DeskDirect LAN Adapter and its 16-bit NDIS 2.01 driver
for Microsoft LAN Manager, follow the instructions below:

 1. Install the HP DeskDirect LAN Adapter, and optionally, run HPVGSET.

Follow instructions in the printed manual.

 2. Run the LAN Manager SETUP utility.

Locate the Microsoft LAN Manager Installation and Configuration
Guide and three Microsoft diskettes labeled "MS-DOS Setup",
"MS-DOS Driver 1", and "MS-DOS Driver 2". Insert the Microsoft
diskette labeled "MS-DOS Setup" into the floppy drive. For example,
if the diskette is in drive A, then execute these DOS commands:

         A:
         SETUP

After several screens of information, the SETUP utility will display
a screen requesting (and supplying defaults) for the source and
destination of the installation. Follow the instructions on the
screen to specify which DOS directory LAN Manager will install the
files. The default directory supplied will be C:\LANMAN.DOS. Write
down this directory in case changes to the PROTOCOL.INI file are
required. Press the ENTER key to select the installation paths.

The SETUP utility will then prompt for selection of Basic or Enhanced
Workstation, and proceed to load files from the "MS-DOS Setup" disk
and the "MS-DOS Driver 1" disk. The SETUP utility will now display
     the "Network Adapter Driver" window.

 3. Select the network adapter driver.

When the SETUP utility displays the "Network Adapter Drivers" list
window, use the TAB key to highlight the <Other Driver> menu choice
at the bottom of the window. Press the ENTER key.

The SETUP utility next prompts for the network driver disk. Insert
the HP Support Disk into the floppy drive, type A:\ as the path
name for the SETUP utility to search for the driver and press the
ENTER key. After reading the HP Support Disk, the line:

         HP DeskDirect LAN Adapter

will be the only line appearing in the "Network Adapter Drivers"
list window. Press the ENTER key to select the driver.

 4. Select network protocols.

After selecting the network adapter driver, the SETUP utility will
display a "Network Protocols for HP DeskDirect LAN Adapter" window.
Select the desired protocol(s) and continue with the installation.

 5. Complete the LAN Manager installation.

Before the LAN Manager SETUP utility exits, it will advise that the
PROTOCOL.INI file should be verified. The HP DeskDirect LAN Adapter
DOS NDIS 2.01 driver is self-configuring and does not require
     additional parameters.

If more than one HP DeskDirect LAN Adapter is installed in the
computer, a location parameter (i.e. ADAPTERSLOT, ADAPTERTYPE, or
IOADDRESS) must be specified in each [HPFEND_NIF] section of the
     PROTOCOL.INI file.

NOTE: Refer to the PROTOCOL.TXT file under \NDIS2 subdirectory of the
HP Support Disk for descriptions of each PROTOCOL.INI parameter.

The installation is finished. Reboot the computer to have the changes
made to the system configuration during the installation take effect.
