Installation Instructions for
Toshiba Windows NT 4.0 APM Subsystem
and Toshiba NT 4.0 Utilities

PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE INSTALLING THIS SOFTWARE

IF YOU ARE USING OR PLAN TO USE A PCMCIA NETWORK ADAPTER WITH WINDOWS NT 4.0, YOU MUST INSTALL WINDOWS NT's NETWORKING COMPONENTS PRIOR TO INSTALLING THIS SOFTWARE!

INFORMATION

This software package contains the Toshiba Windows NT 4.0 Utilities (MaxTime, FnEsse, and HWSetup) for your Toshiba portable computer, as well as the necessary drivers needed to support these utilities. For detailed information about these utilities and subsystems, please view the information file which has also been copied to your hard disk as C:\TOSHNT40.HTM. This file can be viewed using Microsoft Internet Explorer which is included with Windows NT 4.0 or the Web browser of your choice.

The installation routine will attempt to start Internet Explorer (or whatever your default Web browser may be) and load the index of information for you when the installation of the utilities is complete.

INSTALLATION

Since you're reading this, you've already begun the installation process. You can start the installation process at any time by double-clicking on the electronic archive file that you downloaded. If you're reading this because it was opened during the install process, you should read this document, then close your Web browser in order to continue with the installation. You'll have the opportunity to continue (Y) or cancel (N) the installation.

The Toshiba SCI (BIOS) interface should be installed first. This interface allows the Toshiba utilities to communicate with the power management (battery state, power mode, resume mode, etc) facilities built into the Toshiba BIOS. When the SCI installer ends, you'll be prompted to press any key to continue.

The next step is to install the Windows NT 4.0 APM Subsystem. In addition to copying drivers to your hard disk, this sets up the Toshiba entries in the Windows NT registry that will be required by the subsequent components. When the APM Subsystem installer ends, you'll be prompted to press any key to continue.

The last step is to install the Toshiba Windows Utilities applications. These are the MaxTime battery management utility, the Hardware Setup program, and the FnEsse keyboard hotkey mapping application. When the installer is finished, it will attempt to start Microsoft Internet Explorer and load the TOSHNT40.HTM file for you to read. TOSHNT40.HTM will remain in the root directory of C: so that you can view it at any time using Internet Explorer or the Web browser of your choice.

The ASCII text version of this file will also be copied to the root directory of C: as TOSHREAD.NT4 so that you can view it at any time.

VERSION NUMBERS OF THE INCLUDED SOFTWARE

INFORMATION UPDATE by TOSHIBA REGENSBURG, GERMANY (10-01-97)

When the self-extratctor finishes unzipping the file, please run the INSTINFO.BAT routine for installation. - After installation, reboot the system to make the new drivers operational.

This Version now works properly on Windows NT 4.0 in other languages (tested only on Windows NT 4.0 Server German Version).
After the installation and a reboot, some of the buttons will be changed to english. A new button ( Suspend ) will appear. It actives the shutdown to suspend mode by Windows NT.

Hint:
Please install Windows NT, drivers and Service Pack in it's final configuration; then execute the INSTINFO.BAT routine.
If you run the Service Pack after installation of the Toshiba Utilities, the "Suspend" button disappers and the buttons will return to it's original language. The functionality of the Toshiba Utilities will remain (but this not garanteed). The funktion of the 'shutdown' button will alter to shutdown and reboot. Install the Toshiba Utility Package again to bring the shutdown to it's original function (This procedure will NOT bring back the suspend-funktion!!!). The buttons will remain in there original language.

History:
The orignal version starts installation after unzipping. The installation sequence was:
1.) Windows NT APM Subsystem
2.) Toshiba SCI (BIOS) interface
3.) Toshiba Windows Utilities applications
After changing the sequence on it's present form ( SCI interface - APM Subsystem -
Toshiba Utilities ), it works on Windows NT without any error messages.

*** End of Update ***

ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION ARCHIVE

The electronic distribution file was compressed using the InfoZip freeware ZIP archiver. The 32-bit self-extracting code is provided using the WinZip Self-Extractor, which TAIS has licensed from Nico-Mak Computing.

If for some reason you need to extract the contents of the electronic distribution file, you can use Info-Zip's UNZIP program, or PKUnzip version 2.04g or later. The electronic distribution archive contains subdirectories which are required in order to complete the installation. You'll need to use the "-d" option if you're using PKUnzip.
