Drivers and Utilities for Windows NT 4.0

This document helps you use Toshiba's drivers and utilities for Windows NT 4.0 to migrate from Windows 95 to Windows NT 4.0 Workstation on your Toshiba portable computer.

Contents

What is included

Toshiba's drivers and utilities are required to use many features of your Toshiba computer with Windows NT 4.0. The file you downloaded includes:

You can also download the video and audio drivers for your Toshiba computer from Toshiba's website or from Toshiba's other online services. Follow the same procedure you used to obtain this file.

Release Notes:

  1. The sound driver must be installed AFTER the installation of the APM subsystem. If the sound driver is installed before APM, the sound will be distorted. Also, if APM is uninstalled, the sound driver must be uninstalled and then reinstalled again.
  2. If a previous version of APM is installed in the system, uninstall it before you install the new APM.
  3. The system will be put into instant security mode, but not actual suspend mode, when it is docked with the Desk Station V Plus docking station. The reason is that PCI option cards and SCSI devices in the docking station do not support APM. Actual suspend will cause loss of network connection and malfunction of SCSI devices.
  4. Maintaining a network connection through a suspend/resume cycle is supported with the following PCMCIA network cards only:

Troubleshooting

This section contains solutions for problems Toshiba had found when this document was written. If you have a problem that isn't covered here, refer to your computer's User's Guide for general troubleshooting procedures.

If your problem is with a PC Card or expansion card, contact the manufacturer of the card or Microsoft. Microsoft's Web site contains a great deal of information about hardware devices.

If your problem continues and it is with a Toshiba feature or utility, refer to your computer's User's Guide for information about contacting Toshiba.

Using APM with a PC Card network adapter

If your are using APM and a PC Card network adapter under Windows NT 4.0, install the network driver first and then the APM driver in that order. This ensures that the computer maintains the network connection in Suspend/Resume mode.

US Robotics Sportster 28.8 Modem

Some users have reported a problem with the US Robotics Sportster 28.8 modem under Windows NT 4.0 Workstation when using Hyperterminal.

After dialing a number, exiting and re-entering Hyperterminal, the program may not re-dial the previous number and may report that you are already connected.

To work around this problem, Try the following.

  1. Remove the name.ht file for the session during which the problem occurred.
  2. Add a new connection, re-enter the problem telephone number, and save the entry.
Hyperterminal creates an icon for newname.ht.
  3. Dial the newly created number.
  4. Open the session that caused trouble and select Properties from the File menu.
  5. Change the Port setting to the default or another selection.
  6. Exit Hyperterminal.
  7. Double-click the newly created newname.ht icon and redial the problem number.

If the connection still is not normal, try switching back and forth several times between the problem and new entries, as explained in steps 3 and 4.

If you continue to have this problem, check periodically on the Microsoft and US Robotics web sites for a fix or patch for Hyperterminal.

Uninstalling APM

You can remove APM, by double-clicking the Add/Remove Programs icon in Settings, Control Panel and following the instructions.

Installing Windows NT Service Packs

Before installing Windows NT Service Packs, you should remove APM following the instructions above.  After the Service Pack is installed, you can reinstall the APM subsystem
